Nitrous Oxide Disposal

For the collection, transportation, storage, degassing and disposal of seized nitrous oxide canisters and associated materials

Following the reclassification of nitrous oxide as a Class C drug, forces face increasing challenges relating to the safe handling, storage and disposal of seized canisters. This national framework supports police forces and participating public sector organisations with a compliant, efficient and environmentally responsible solution for managing nitrous oxide evidence and recovered canisters, ensuring specialist suppliers capable of delivering services that comply with current legislation, health and safety requirements, and environmental regulations.

Scope of contract

The framework enables participating organisations to procure services for the local storage, collection, transportation, central storage, degassing and disposal of nitrous oxide gas and canisters.

The objective is to provide a compliant, efficient, and environmentally responsible service for secure storage, safe transfer, and legal disposal of seized nitrous oxide canisters, contents and containers, ensuring alignment with UK legal frameworks and environmental regulations.

This framework covers the following lots:

  • Lot 1 – Full service: end to end provision of facilities and services for collection, transportation, storage and disposal of full, partially discharged, nominally empty and empty Nitrous Oxide canisters.
  • Lot 2 – Transportation and storage: provision of collection, transportation and storage facilities for full, partially discharged, nominally empty and empty Nitrous Oxide canisters.
  • Lot 3 – Collection, transportation to supplier facility of partially discharged, nominally empty Nitrous Oxide canisters. Canisters are to be either: a) degassing canisters and where applicable valve removal, disposal of empty canisters, or; b) disposal by incineration of Nitrous Oxide gas and canisters.
  • Lot 4 – Collection, transportation and disposal of empty Nitrous Oxide canisters to generate revenue for user organisations.
